A bit up there in price, but worth it if you enjoy an elegant, restrained California Pinot Noir. Light ruby in color, this wine has an alluring spicy black berry nose. Light to medium bodied, it’s velevty on the palate with rich jammy black-fruit flavors. Itlingers on the finish with subtly sweet fruit notes. Great with rpast lamb or grilled salmon.

Ridge California Sonoma County Three Valleys 2008 $17.99Wow. Always one of my favorite producers from California, Ridge delivers an outstanding wine, and value, with this Zinfandel-based blend. A mix of Zinfandel (74%), Petite Sirah (11%), and lesser amounts of Carignan, Mataro, Syrah, and Grenache, this wine is deep opaque-ruby in color. The nose is all about rich berry and crushed blacked pepper. Medium to full bodied, it delivers loads of rich. jammy fruit along with intense flavors of blackberry, currants, and licorice. On the finish, nice notes of spice. Perfect for grilled meats or semi-aged cheeses.

Opaque ruby in color, this value-priced Argentinean has a cigar-box and black-fruit nose. Light to medium bodied, it delivers spicy black-cherry flavors and finishes with blue plum. Adequately structured, but a bit hot with alcohol that might be tamed with a thick steak or some grilled sausage.

There’s a lingering finish to this elegantly structured wine. A nice match for pork tenderloin with rosemary.

This southern Italian red is dark garner in color and has an intense nose of strawberries and other red berries. Medium to full bodied, with rich, ripe-berry flavors and notes of vanilla, it is well structured  and has a nice, crushed-black-pepper finish. Great with lamb or beef.

Paul Jaboulet Aine Parallele 45 Cotes du Rhone 2007 $12.99Dark ruby in color, this classic Cotes du Rhone (60% Grenache, 40% Syrah) has a berry and black-pepper nose Lighter in body yet packed with tart-cherry flavors followed by blac-pepper spice on the finish. An enjoyable red for lamb, beefo, or semi-aged cheeses. A good value as well.

Palestra Vinho Tinto Douro DOC 2007 $9.99Purple in color, this Portuguese red has a subdued, rustic berry nose with some spice notes. Lighter bodied with dry yet juicy berry and cherry flavors, it is a gulpable red. Nicely structured with supple tannins and good fruit on the palate. There are cherry notes on the tart/spicy lingering finish. At this price, an outstanding value.

Ravenswood Vintner’s Blend Zinfandel California 2007 $10.99Garnet in color, this well known California Zinfandel as a forward nose of red fruit and raspberry. Medium bodied, it is packed with spicy fruit and balsamic flavors. It has a lingering, tart-fruit finish. Moe fruit tans spice, but still very nice. Good with a grilled pork tenderloin.

Perfect for roast lamb or goose.

Terredora Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso DOC 2006 $19.99Deep ruby red in color, this southern Italian has a complex nose of earth and berries. Medium bodied, it offers flavors of ripe red fruit complemented by hints of licorice. The finish is adequate with spice and some lingering jammy notes. I tried this with a simple grilled steak and thought it was not a good match. I think it be far better with white meats or a red-sauced pasta with capers. This is a fine example of this Campagna classic made solely from Piedirosso.

David Bruce Petite Sirah Central Coast $16.99Ain’t nothing “petite” about this bold wine, starting with its deep opaque ruby color and then its unrestrained earthy mushroom nose with hints of toffee. On the palate, it’s full bodied, smooth, and silky and it offers plenty of bold, black fruit and plum flavors. It has a long dry somewhat tannic finish with plum and cedar notes. A great accompaniment to grilled sausage or steaks.

Monte Antico Toscana IGT 2007 $10.99This Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon crafted by Franco Bernabei for Neil Empson is crimson red in color and has a forward red-berry, earthy mushroom nose. Light to medium bodied, it offers bright berry and cherry flavors and is well structured with good acidity for dining. There’s good length to the red-fruit finish.
