TableWine's Best of 2002

It may seem a bit trendy or even presumptuous to issue a "Best Of" list, but nonetheless I thought it would be useful for our readers--especially for some of our newer ones--to look back over last year's features and choose the top wine from each feature.

When there was an extremely close call between two wines, I generally let price be the determining factor and opted for the less expensive.

I've also included a link to the page on which each of these wines was first reviewed, if you would like to see their competition or missed one of the features.

Enjoy.

2000 Eric Texier, Viognier, Cotes du Rhone $15.99

Gold in color, this wine has a forward, perfumy, floral nose of sweet violets and honeysuckle, with nuances of spice. On the palate, it is buttery and unctuous and delivers plenty of peach flavors, with creamy undertones, that metamorphose from sweet to dry. Light to medium bodied, the wine is well balanced with good acidity. The long, lasting finish is marked by orange zest with some toast notes. This wine was extraordinary with baked salmon. Imported by LDM Wines, Inc., New York, NY.

This wine was reviewed in our January 2002 feature on Viognier, A Wine by Any Other Name.

1997 Zaca Mesa, Cuvee Z, Santa Barbara County ($16.99)

It has plenty of tart plum flavors that evolve into cherry, as well as some hints of tobacco. The finish is good, with lingering flavors of tart cherry and oak. TableWine is a personal website and does not sell any wine. However, many of the wines we review are purchased from our local wine merchants, Wine & Spirit World in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ and The Wine Seller in Ridgewood, NJ. The Wine & Spirit World website may help you locate a good number of our selections. You might also use the database of quality wine merchants at Wine Searcher.com to help find wines that are difficult to locate. Finally, if your local wine store does not carry a wine that you've read about here, don't hesitate to ask them to order a bottle or two for you. For imported wines, you may need to supply them with the name of the importer or distributor.
